Ashkhen Babayan, president of “Spitaki Helsinki Group” human rights NGO, and lawyer Arevhat Petrosyan held two-day meetings for the women of Berd, Ijevan, Dilijan and Gandzakar communities of Tavush marz on the topic of “Formation of joint ways to prevent domestic violence”. against violence” (2020-2022) program, which is financed by the European Union.
On the first day of the meetings, the participants filled out a checklist assessing prior knowledge, which gave an opportunity to understand what ideas and knowledge women have about domestic violence. Then, expert Arevhat Petrosyan spoke about the concept of domestic violence, its types and legal regulations. The meetings in all communities were accompanied by healthy and interesting discussions .
The women of Berd community quickly got involved in the discussion of the topic, told the stories that happened to their grandmothers and their peers. The women of the community mentioned that, unfortunately, there are many such cases, and the topic of domestic violence continues to be relevant. During the Ijevan meeting, some participants told that they witnessed domestic violence and personally prevented its further, more dangerous developments. Women from Noyemberyan, Gandzakar and Dilijan enthusiastically participated in the discussions, even sharing personal incidents.
The participants were also informed about the SAFE YOU mobile application and received information leaflets about the application. On the last day of the meetings, the participants filled out the same checklist again, the results of which showed how effective such meetings were. The women had obviously enriched their knowledge, and the most active among them received certificates of participation. We remind you that within the framework of the “Women human rights defenders are taking steps against gender violence in Armenia” (2020-2022) program, meetings and discussions will also be held in five communities of Shirak region. The project “Women Human Rights Defenders Take Steps Against Gender-Based Violence in Armenia” (2020-2022 ) is implemented by the Coalition Against Violence Against Women with EU funding.
